WELCOME

Welcome to the home of Wellesbourne Sword Club of High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.

Experienced fencers of all ages are catered for at our excellent facilities in our base in Wycombe Sports Centre on Thursday evening between 20.00 and 22.00hrs: Click here for map. There is normally 8 electric boxes out with all three weapons being fenced at all levels. Afterwards we discuss tactics at the Three Horseshoes, Burrows Grove (Marlow Bottom Road).(Pub of the year 2005).

Beginners courses are held throughout the year on Thursday evenings at the same venue.

Fencing

What is this sport ? Modern fencing has retained the basic goal of duelling; hitting an opponent with your sword without getting hit yourself. Contemporary fencers use blunted swords to play a game of passionate, exhilarating physical chess. One of the original modern Olympic sports, fencing provides a vigorous workout, rewards mental agility over sheer strength & power, and is one of the safest sports. In fact, you're more likely to be injured jogging or playing golf.

There are 3 weapons used today Foil , Epee and Sabre. Beginners usually start with the Foil. Fencing uses many strange terms some from old French and these are listed here.

Joining or Visiting the Club

We fence on Thursday evenings from 20.00 hrs. Fencers of any ability are welcome to join the club by filling out an on line form on the membership page or come as a visitor. Both should fill out an indemnity form. Ages 13 and above. Currently 40% of the membership is under 18 years old.

Youth Fencing

Wellesbourne only caters for anyone who is 13 and over. The Wycombe Sports Centre at Handy Cross runs its own courses for children from the ages of about 7 - 13. Please contact the sports centre for more details - see links page.
