Information about Wellesbourne and fencing as a sport.
Wellesbourne Sword Club was formed in the early seventies at Wellesbourne school near High Wycombe as an evening class. One of our early coaches was Norman Heads.
Now based at Handy Cross Sports Centre, Wellesbourne has a strong membership of men and women of all ages (13 years and over) and abilities who enjoy the friendly yet competitive atmosphere of the club. There is always a good spread of ages and ability at the club.
Our Aims
Te Club's aim is to provide the best environment for new fencers to take their first steps in the sport, as well as encouraging and nurturing the talents of more experienced fencers competing at home and abroad.
Wellesbourne provides the highest levels of coaching and facilities, and gives the chance to take part in the exciting and challenging sport of fencing.
The club is affiliated to and regulated by the British Fencing Association and follows their guidence on Health and Safety and Child Protection.
Every member of the club, whatever their ability on the piste, has the opportunity to shape its organisation and future development, so please feel free to be involved!
Wellesbourne Sword Club is run by a committee, and adheres to a formal constitution.
Competitions
Although some fence just for fitness, the sport is really about competition and is a good stress releaser. Internally we have a completion for all club fencers. There is a club competition night the first Thursday of each month. This will get you used to competitions and electric equipment. There is also a novices category in the Club Championships.
Refer to the Competitions page for a listing of competition events
Our Arms
There are 3 weapons used in fencing (Fencers do not normally call them swords):
- Foil (normally used by beginners)
- Epee
- Sabre
Click here for more information on each weapon. Fencing is played out on a set area known as a Piste.
