Congratulations to Nigel Hinchliff who came a credible 14th in the Vets World Championships in Moscow and to Sylvia Brown who came 11th in the Sabre and 16th in the epee.

Congratulations to Sylvia Brown who has again been picked to represent Great Britain in the World Championships in Sydney, she will fence Sabre and Epee.

Gillian Worman achieved an excellent result in the Birmingham International event at the university at Easter coming 13th out of 75 ensuring she moves up the national rankings.
March 2007
NVA Nationals - Gillian Worman won a silver medal in the National foil competition - an excellent result. Malcolm Allton proved he is not only a good coach by coming seventh equal in a tough Epee event at Gloucester and Sylvia topped her age group in the women's epee.
Gillian was again picked to fence for Northern Ireland in this years 5 nations in Dublin at the end of March.
November 2006
Harry Jones was awarded a Bronze medal by the British Fencing Association, This much deserved award was for services to fencing over many years. The club congratulates Harry who was a successful competitive fencer and who has two children who also fenced and has coached at the club for a long time.

and was picked for all 3 weapons in the World Championships in Bath. (Reserve
in foil). She fenced in Sabre and epee at the event.

The Flying Friendship Cup was held in Paris and we had a strong team this year coming 2nd to Air France.
See photo of the cup we last won in the early 90's.
Sylvia won 2 silver medals at the NVA age group championships in sabre and epee, Malcolm won bronze at Sabre.
April 2006
WSC had four fencers picked to fence in this years Southcombe Cup the 2nd division of the Winton Cup team event, Gillian for Northern Ireland and Linda for Southern region. Sylvia and Malcolm fenced for the East Midlands.
Linda was part of the winning Southern Section team who won the Southcombe Cup and are promoted back to the Winton for 2007. Beating Combined Services, East Midlands, Northern Ireland, London and Yorkshire on the way.
Gillian was also fenced in the 5 Nations match in Wales early in the month.
March 2006
Ed Dudetsky came a good 13th in the Invicta fencing foil.
Aileen Skerman came 23rd in u/16 national foil - a huge improvement from last years result.
Gillian was very successful in the NVA nationals coming third in the foil.
Ex member George Liston won the Nottingham John Warburton Trophy at Nottingham with Andrew Brown 10th, Mike Skipp 12th and Malcolm Allton 30th. Linda fenced in the foil and came 26th and Sylvia was 29th in the women's epee on the same weekend.

Ester Kuhmley came second the Scottish students competition
Mike Skipp has achieved a good result in the county epee by coming 2nd by splitting Philippe & Alain Barbasiewicz by coming 2nd.
A team of 3 Epeeists (see photo) Sylvia Brown, Malcolm Allton and Andrew Brown won the to the Jack Ashmenall Memorial Tournament in Caddington on February 26th. Andrew fenced Jack many times in league matches and remembers his friendship and tough fencing.

Duffy Open in Dublin was a tough but enjoyable team competition using the Italian relay system which requires the fencers to play a strategic game at different scores. We entered a men's and women's team this time both ending up in 5th place the men out of 24 teams. Adrian & Andrew B &. Julian. - Ruth , Liz & Linda. Some hard fencing & live music was enjoyed during the weekend. Results.
David Goodyear is taking part in a The Fulcrum Challenge project with other pupils from Dr Challoner's Grammar School helping to build a school in India, he needs sponsorship to help in the cost of his flight. Ask him how you can help.

New committee confirmed at AGM - Peter Roberts now Chairman & Gillian Worman joins as Honorary Secretary, David Goodyear is our Captain & Youth Representative. New fees started in January £22 per month for adults & £17 for juniors.
The club thanked Julian Poulter for his efforts whilst Chairman including initially setting up this web site.
David Goodyear who is one of 20 young fencers at the club was picked for the Cadet Winton Cup which was held on 17/18th December 2005 at Millfield school and is a six weapon competition between the regions in Great Britain where some of the top cadets get the chance to meet each other and represent their region in this team event. Click for his results. David made an impressive debut appearance winning 13 out of 22 fights although he has only been fencing 18 months.
Southern region Cadet Team Manager Sylvia Brown said "it is encouraging to see the numbers of Wellesbourne young fencers on the increase and doing well so quickly"
November 2005
Very few members of WSC entered the regional epee & sabre at Eton in fact only Skippy & Andrew fenced. No entries in age groups - where were you ? you will not improve unless you enter competitions. Andrew came 3rd in men's epee having beaten the winner Alain Barbasiewicz twice and only losing one fight all day to the second placed fencer in DE.
October 2005
Our club team came 3rd overall on 30 October at the Wellesbourne Team Trophy - an invitation competition for 9 teams of two fencers per weapon. A great result with our women foilists Gillian and Linda coming first in their discipline and epeeists Mike and Edward coming 2nd.Others fencing were Ruth, Emma, David and Mark in Sabre and Peter, Ken as foilists with Phil fencing as reserve
Andrew Brown won the Middlesex Unisex Epee beating well known epeists Howard West and Robin Davenport in the final.
Mark Dymott who has fenced in club teams in all weapons leaves the club after 17 years to move home to Newbury.
September 2005
Shropshire Open saw 3 WSC fencers - Mike Skipp narrowly missed winning the competition coming 2nd at 15/14 to Jonathan Willis with Andrew 10th. Linda Lawes (Foil) and Sylvia Brown (Epee) have fenced in the GB squad at the World Championships in Tampa Florida in September (NVA) both attaining a place in the last 16, Linda being beaten by the eventual winner.
In the foil team match scores were equal at 42 but with priority against them GB were saved by Linda scoring the last crucial hit.
Ruth, Aileen and Gillian all have travelled to the Essex Open a large open competition.

Teams visited Mentmore for return match we won the epee 69:49 but lost the foil (only 2 team members turned up !) 5:4. Epee: Liz, Ruth, David & Quentin - Foil Phil & Peter.

Flying Friendship Cup
One of our teams won Bronze for third place in this years FFC held near Waterloo (Brussels) on a very hot 18th June. Peter Roberts (Foil), Gillian Worman (W/Foil), Malcolm Allton (Sabre) and Andrew Brown came third (see picture to left) by their results against difficult opposition from teams (two per club) from Aeroport de Paris, Air France and Iceland Air. Mike Skipp won Gold in the individual Epee and Gillian third equal in Foil. A party of 13 fencers with partners / parents went to fence in this competition and enjoyed a dinner in the Grande Place in Brussels.
County Fencing Picnic
26th June sees the annual Fencing Picnic - a team event normally fenced non electric outdoors - several club members going teams are picked on the day - very good fun.

Sylvia came 6th in Veterans European Championships in Linz and Nigel was 32nd out of 63 having beaten the 23rd seed in the DE.
Lucas Kuhmley is now ranked 5th in Cadet rankings.
24 hour fencing marathon in London 28/9 May.Come along to help raise money for good causes.
Isle of Wight results. 8 members went. Esther came 5th and Ruth 20th out of 41 in Epee, Lukas was 30 & Ed D was 31in Foil.Mens epee - Lukas was 20th and Andrew 22 out of 89.
March 2005
Mike Skipp came a credible 23rd at the Birmingham International on Easter Sunday. Linda Lawes came 8th at the NVA Championships. Andrew Brown won third place at the John Warburn Epee Trophy (Nottingham Open) after two rounds of pools and 5 DE fights winning the Vets trophy as well.
WSC drew with Mentmore 8-8 in the first of many friendly matches the new team captains are organizing - be prepared to travel in the return matches ! Both Foil and Epee were fenced and teams included Ed D, Ruth, Phil and Peter Roberts.

Two of our (former) members and pupils of Harry have been chosen to fence at the World Cadet and Junior Championships team - 23-31 March 2005/ Linz , Austria . CADET: Paul Dazeley JUNIOR: Tom Bennett
Large entry for Slough Open included many from WSC see competition results.
Linda Lawes won the women's BB&O foil, Pippa Scholes came second and Aileen joint third. David Goodyear won the U/16 Sabre and Emma Bishop came 2nd in U/16 Sabre.
WSC entries in age group epee and sabre and in men's foil.
Wellesbourne team of Edward Phillips, Adrian and Andrew Brown came 5th in the Duffy Open in Dublin out of 24 teams, a record entry for this event. Fencing all day till late into the evening in the DE and pool of 5 teams achieving 2nd place ranking after the pools and going down to a young Salle Duffy team, the event was won by Leipzig 2, one of 3 German teams.
Adrian Brown has achieved a excellent result in the Aldershot Open coming 15th out of 95 fencers only loosing to Alasdair Baker the eventual winner. This should gain him a number of ranking points as the NIF count (number of fencers ranked in top 50) was high and standard of fencing good.
